Teaching Children The Word With Music

What we teach our kids stays with them all of their lives. The values and morals that we teach by our words and our actions have a huge impact on who they are, what they will become and the way they look at the world.

Even though they may not seem like it all the time, little kids can absorb tremendous amounts of information. Children are like little sponges, absorbing everything that they see and hear. 

Think about it, most kids by age 3, are singing along with every television commercial that comes on. They have a tremendous capacity to learn and retain information.

So it’s important that you as a mom or dad teach them about the things of God. Even when, no.. especially when they are small!

The Bible tells us very clearly “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.”  Proverbs 22:6 

The hebrew word which is translated as “Train” in Proverbs 22:6 is kha-nokh. It means “to guide, to tutor, to educate; to teach” as well as “to inaugurate, to dedicate, to consecrate”

Hopefully you can fill a little bit of the weight behind this word train. This wasn’t just some flipant statement that the Lord made. Nothing that God says is unimportant. Children need to be well grounded in the truths of the Bible, even when they are little. 

Obviously, You can’t just open up your king James Bible and start reading to them and expect them to get it. Your going to have it break it down and make it relevant to there world at there age.

A great way to break down the word of God and help kids remember it is through music.

There is something that happens when words connect with a melody. It makes it much easier for you to retain it. For example, there are rock and roll songs I heard growing up in the ’60s that maybe I haven’t heard in decades. But I can hear an old song from childhood and sing along with it, remembering every word. Why is that? God designed music that way.

Statistics tell us that:

• Music enhances the process of learning. The systems they nourish, which include our integrated sensory, attention, cognitive, emotional and motor capacities, are shown to be the driving forces behind all other learning. ~ Konrad, R.R., Empathy, Arts and Social Studies

• The schools that produced the highest academic achievement in the United States today are spending 20% to 30% of the day on the arts, with special emphasis on music. ~ International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IAEEA) 

• The world’s top academic countries place a high value on music education. Hungary, Netherlands and Japan have required music training at the elementary and middle school levels, both instrumental and vocal, for several decades. ~ International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IAEEA) Test 

Music is a powerful, spiritual force! That’s why we are so excited about our brand new kids praise and worship projects “Love out Loud” and “I Believe In Jesus”!

These albums are full of songs that kids will love and that will teach and facilitate them in expressing their love for Jesus Christ… out loud.

In my over 30 years of ministry I have witnessed a generation of children grow up and seen the impact of teaching them God’s Word and the power of anointed music on their lives.

What’s exciting to me is that the new songs and videos we are doing on these projects are the best music I’ve done in all my years of recording. But more than that, the message and anointing of God are upon them.

There is an old saying expressing the virtues of song: “If music be the food of love, play on.” Well, music can be the food of love… God’s love! Along with our verbal teaching we can communicate the Gospel and theology in depth through the medium of music.
