THIS WEEK’S PROJECT

Marriage

Ecclesiastes 4:12…And a 3 fold cord is not quickly broken.

Marriage is at the apex of all human relationships. It is the only relationship that joins 2 people, a man and a woman, and makes them one.

Malachi 2:15 (NLT) Didn’t the LORD make you one with your wife? In body and spirit you are his. And what does he want? Godly children from your union. So guard your heart; remain loyal to the wife of your youth.

This joining happens on three different levels: spirit, soul and body. Today we will discuss how you are joined in your soul, or your mind.

There is a great challenge in marriage. It is the fact that men and women think so totally different. So, why is it like that and who did this to us? Actually, it was God.

Genesis 2:18 (KJV) And the LORD God said, [It is] not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.

God made this declaration about Adam who at that time was alone in the garden. He declared it’s not a good thing for a man to be alone. We need other people in life. Isolation is not good. God told Adam, “I’m going to make you an “help meet”. I used the King James Version for clarity here.

Notice the word is not helpmate. It is help meet. This is 2 different Hebrew words. The word help means what it says. But the word “meet” is a little veiled. It actually means “helper against”. Hmm. Another way to say it is “a helper opposite.” Maybe the best way to say it is “a helper with an different opinion.” Ringing any bells?

Do you ever feel like no matter what you say as a man your wife is going to have another opinion? So why did God make men and women opposite like that? Is He just messing with us? No. It’s because you need each other’s unique way of looking at life. God made you different so that you see things from unique perspectives so that you can make better decisions in life together as you honor each other’s diverse vantage points.

Action

Spend time discussing how each of you see things in life. What do you like that’s different? How are you the same? Have some fun with this one. Learn to honor your spouses opinion even when you disagree and learn to…listen.
